Here's what I can do for you:
Business and organizational writing: business plans, proposals, newsletters, brochures, company or organizational profiles for publication in print or online.
Article writing: I have strong interviewing, researching and writing skills. I understand what makes a good story, and know how to tell stories in a way that holds reader attention. Favourite subject areas:
Publication coordination: I'm very experienced at shepherding publications through all of their phases of production, from beginning to end, coordinating the skills of writers, designers, photographers, and printers or webmasters.
Copyediting: I enjoy the process of taking a good look at a piece of writing to ensure that it is clearly written and error-free. The work of a copyeditor generally includes not only catching mistakes in punctuation and grammar, but also checking facts and internal consistency, and flagging repetition. See my editing page here. Press and marketing materials: I can write press releases, media advisories, backgrounders and fact sheets that will appeal to editors, as well as copy for brochures, rack cards, annual reports, strategic plans, etc. SPECIAL PROJECTS: I enjoy tackling any kind of research issue, and I’m happy to go beyond research to develop a strategy and implement it, based on my research findings (see Research and Projects here). Academic editing: I consistently made A’s in my essays at university, and have taught undergrad writing. I’m happy to coach students to higher marks on essays and other written assignments. Please see my Writing and Editing pages for samples of my work. Need something you don't see here? Please contact me to discuss your needs. Reasonable rates, no surprises! |
I
worked with Neil often during a four-year period when I was director of
design and he was an editor for a university publications department. I
have been in this business for decades, and Neil is one of the best
people I have worked with. He was good at all aspects of editing:
working with volunteer writers, writing creative captions and headlines,
cutting text to fit, etc. At the same time he was great at pulling
together all the other elements necessary to complete a major
publication: organizing photo shoots, checking facts, getting executive
approvals, etc. All the while, he maintained a cheerful, upbeat
temperament, and was a pleasure to work with. --Shepley Hansen, Art Director, Bluebird Graphics Inc., Fairfield, Iowa
I’m really glad I had Neil working with me on this project, a non-fiction book that was published in late 2012. We quickly developed a good working relationship. He was very tactful at pointing out areas for improvement, but at the same time was always encouraging. He was really good at specifying the strengths of the text also. Neil was helpful at providing language and grammar tips, while maintaining a light-edit approach with the text. He made it a practice not to encroach on my natural voice. I also appreciated his reliability and accessibility--he was there when I needed him. Neil was a pleasure to work with. --Jay Gardner, author, businessman |
